How many renters?

The 1 in 3 figure, as Tava Olsen reminded us on Twitter, is the proportion of homes that are rented.  The proportion of people is probably higher, but it’s surprisingly hard to tell. I’m going to outsource this to me from 2017, when it was a Stat-of-the-Week nomination.

The 2018 Census had a question about ‘dwelling you live in’
    The choices were
    1. Hold it in a family Trust
2.Own or partly own with or without a mortgage
    3.Neither of these

The obvious 3rd question avoided , was – Rent.
‘ They dont really want to know’ is the answer to the BIG question.

The number the Greens (I think) are looking for is either the proportion of people or the proportion of adults who live in rented dwellings, rather than the number of people who personally contribute to the rent of the place they live. You could get it from Census microdata: the sum of the household sizes for households in rented dwellings, divided by the population size.
