Frontpage news

James Wendelbourn, a graphic designer, has summarized the content of the NZ Herald front page every day for a year.

He’s made a series of infographics about it, at sellingthenewz.tumblr.com, for example

I don’t really like the graphics from the point of view of presentation of quantitative information, but the actual content is interesting.

As always with this sort of thing, you might disagree with the classifications, but they are generally reasonable: I like the division of ‘consumer’ news into “outrage”, “shopping”, and “other”.

It would have been interesting to do a gender analysis. Stories about women, men or both.
(It kinda struck me when I saw the pictures of the most photographed people.)

I loved that the parade of stories in the Herald about house prices get classified as “soft news” rather than “hard news”. As we know, the analysis of house sales data is most often “soft”.

The Prominent Faces graphic has got a few comments about the lack of women, so I’ve amended it to be clearer: the first four faces are the most popular faces (Richie McCaw, Dan Carter, Kim Dotcom and SBW), and the last two is how they compare with the party leaders (John Key, David Shearer). I wanted to show the lack of politicians compared to celebrities.

Without going back and checking, women who did feature multiple times on the front page were Valarie Adams and Anna Guy, with 4-6 each. However, neither got more than SBW (9). And, I’ll note, largely in contrast to the men, both weren’t featured for the greatest reasons (Adams because of her gold medal drama, and Guy because of the murder trial but then because of TV aspirations).
